    The Response of Serum Cortisol and Leptin Levels to Academic Stress

    Background: Medical students are subjected to various types of stress during the academic course and they react differently. This study is an attempt to establish a relationship between the coping abilities, serum cortisol and leptin levels in response to academic examination stress in first year medical students. Methods: Thirty four 1st year medical students between 18 to 21 yrs of age were randomly selected and their coping abilities were assessed using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Two fasting blood samples were drawn, one on the day of examination (Situation I) and the second after the completion of the examination (Situation II). Serum cortisol and leptin levels were estimated using a standardized RIA Kit and the levels obtained were correlated with the psychometric data. Results: The results showed increased levels of cortisol prior to examination in the poor adjusters in comparison to the good adjusters. The levels of cortisol decreased after examination in both good and poor adjusters with the poor adjusters showing higher levels. On the other hand, leptin levels increased in good adjusters in comparison with poor adjusters in Situation I and in Situation II the good adjusters showed a marginal decrease and poor adjusters maintained the same levels of leptin. Conclusion: Cortisol and leptin respond inversely to academic stress. Cortisol levels sharply decline from stressful to post-stressful situation indicating the wane of stress

    Development and Wind Tunnel Evaluation of a SMA Based Trim Tab Actuator for a Civil Aircraft

    This paper presents about the development and wind tunnel evaluation of an SMA based smart trim tab for a typical 2 seater civil aircraft. SMA actuator was housed in the port side of the elevator for actuating the trim tab. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on a full scale Horizontal Tail model with Elevator and Trim Tab at free stream speeds of 25, 35 & 45 m/sec and also for a number of deflections of the elevator (30° up, 0° neutral & 25° down) and trim-tab 11° & 21° up and 15° & 31° down). To measure the hinge moment experienced by the trim-tab at various test conditions, two miniaturized balances were designed and fabricated. Gain scheduled proportional integral controller was developed to control the SMA actuated smart trim tab. It was confirmed during the tests that the trim-tab could be controlled at the desired position against the aerodynamic loads acting on it for the various test conditions

    An overview of the utilisation of microalgae biomass derived from nutrient recycling of wet market wastewater and slaughterhouse wastewater

    Microalgae have high nutritional values for aquatic organisms compared to fish meal, because microalgae cells are rich in proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. However, the high cost for the commercial production of microalgae biomass using fresh water or artificial media limits its use as fish feed. Few studies have investigated the potential of wet market wastewater and slaughterhouse wastewater for the production of microalgae biomass. Hence, this study aims to highlight the potential of these types of wastewater as an alternative superior medium for microalgae biomass as they contain high levels of nutrients required for microalgae growth. This paper focuses on the benefits of microalgae biomass produced during the phycore-mediation of wet market wastewater and slaughterhouse wastewater as fish feed. The extraction techniques for lipids and proteins as well as the studies conducted on the use of microalgae biomass as fish feed were reviewed. The results showed that microalgae biomass can be used as fish feed due to feed utilisation efficiency, physiological activity, increased resistance for several diseases, improved stress response, and improved protein retention

    Moving a brain-computer interface (BCI) system from a laboratory demonstration to a consumer oriented real-life applications still possesses severe challenges to the BCI community. This study, aims in discovering a new augmentative communication channel that does not rely on the brains normal output pathway of peripheral nerves and muscles, thus as a result patients with Neuromuscular diseases, could rapidly and seamlessly communicate with the outside world. The study makes use of a commercially available EEG, which is a wireless, single channel, Bluetooth enabled acquisition that is cost effective. The results obtained after evaluation of the software shows its performance at an excellent rate thus, the use of the reduce stressapproach seems to have a great impact in reducing the stress level of a quadriplegic patient in the process. This study demonstrates a truly portable, cost-effective and a practical implementation of an alternative communication channel created for patients with Neuromuscular disorders

    This document details the work carried out in the design and development of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuator for trim-tab actuation. The main objective is to replace the existing servo-motor actuator for the trim-tab with an SMA based actuator. This effort is to eliminate the problem of jamming which is very common in servo-motor actuators. Here an antagonistic scheme of SMA actuation, using two wires where one wire biases the other, is being employed since the trim tab is to be deployed in top as well as bottom direction. The elevator was modified to house the SMA based actuation mechanism. The necessary electronics and software has been developed to actuate and control the trim tab at any required position. Static analysis is carried out in MSC Nastran for making the necessary modification in the elevator to house the mechanism. The peak strains in experiment and analysis have matched well

    Controlling the properties of poly(amino ester urethane)-poly (ethylene glycol)-poly(amino ester urethane) triblock copolymer pH/temperature-sensitive hydrogel

    A series of triblock copolymers composed of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(β-amino ester urethane) (PAEU) was synthesized and characterized. Its aqueous solution can be used as a non-cytotoxic, biodegradable, and pH/temperature-sensitive hydrogel system. The copolymer solutions exhibited sol-to-gel and gel-to-sol transitions with increasing pH and temperature, respectively. The properties of this hydrogel system, such as its sol-gel transition diagram, mechanical properties, and degradation rate, can be controlled by modulating the PEG molecular weight, PAEU block length, copolymer concentration, or structure of the monomers. The presence of urethane groups and ionized tertiary amine groups in the copolymer solution at lightly acidic pH may lead to a strong interaction of the copolymer with formulated bioactive therapeutic agents, while the existence of the gel state under physiological conditions (37 °C, pH 7.4) may enable this copolymer hydrogel to be applicable as a drug/protein carrier
